The Idea Behind Panic Monkey Storage

The Idea Behind Panic Monkey Storage

Panic Monkey Storage started with a problem I had myself.

After COVID, I needed storage.

I did what most people would do. I started looking for a traditional storage unit.

And I ended up on a waiting list.

At the same time, something interesting was happening around Wilmington and the surrounding area.

New storage facilities seemed to be going up everywhere. I watched storage being built along Carolina Beach Road and throughout our growing communities, yet demand remained incredibly strong.

It made me start asking a different question.

What if we didn't always need to build more storage?

What if some of the storage space people needed already existed?

The Space Was Already Here

Drive through almost any neighborhood and you'll see it.

A garage with extra room.

A shed that's barely being used.

A spare room.

A workshop with available space.

At the same time, someone just a few streets away may be searching for somewhere to store their belongings.

The problem wasn't necessarily that the space didn't exist.

There wasn't an easy way to connect the people who had space with the people who needed it.

That's when the idea began to take shape.

An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Think about how much our behavior has changed.

Uber showed us that someone else's car could become transportation.

DoorDash created a marketplace connecting restaurants, drivers, and hungry customers.

VRBO helped homeowners turn unused property into places for travelers to stay.

These companies didn't invent cars, restaurants, or houses.

Technology simply made it easier for people to use assets and services that already existed.

We began wondering:

Why couldn't storage work the same way?

A neighbor has unused space.

Another neighbor needs storage.

Technology connects them.

That simple idea eventually became Panic Monkey Storage.

But Storage Requires Trust

There was an obvious challenge.

Would someone feel comfortable storing their belongings at another person's property?

Would a homeowner feel comfortable allowing someone they didn't know to use their space?

Those were questions we couldn't ignore.

But technology had also changed dramatically.

Doorbell cameras and security cameras such as Ring had become commonplace. Identity verification, digital payments, online agreements, platform communication, ratings, reviews, and other technologies were already helping people safely navigate marketplace transactions every day.

We believed those tools could help create greater transparency and accountability around neighbor to neighbor storage too.

Still, having an idea wasn't enough.

Then Came Three Years of Research

We didn't launch Panic Monkey Storage the next morning.

We spent roughly three years researching the concept, talking with potential customers, developing the business model, studying the storage industry, and working through the technology and processes needed to make the marketplace possible.

There were plenty of twists, changes, lessons, and a few side tracks along the way.

There were also some important moments that told us we might be onto something.

Our concept was recognized through the RIoT Accelerator, and we later became a finalist for the NC IDEA MICRO grant.

Each experience helped us challenge the idea, learn from customers, and continue improving what we were building.

More Than Another Storage Company

Panic Monkey Storage isn't about building another row of storage units.

It's about making better use of space that already exists.

A renter gets another local storage option.

A homeowner gets an opportunity to turn unused space into an extra source of income.

And instead of all of that economic activity leaving the neighborhood, more of it can stay within the local community.

That's the part of this idea we love most.

Neighbors helping neighbors.

And Now, We Bring You Panic Monkey Storage

What started with being unable to find a storage unit became a question.

That question became an idea.

The idea became three years of research and development.

And today, it has become Panic Monkey Storage.

We're introducing a new way to think about storage in Wilmington, Leland, and coastal North Carolina.

It may feel like a new concept today.

But there was a time when getting into a stranger's car through an app sounded strange too.

So did staying in someone's home that you found online.

Sometimes technology changes what's possible.

We believe neighbor storage is an idea whose time has come.

Have space? Put it to work.

Need space? Find it closer to home.

Panic Monkey Storage. Neighbors helping neighbors.
